Addition Through Subtraction

⚔️ Warriors,

The saying is true - less is more.

We always want the best and to be the best.

And that is a good thing.

But sometimes, we can do the most and gain the least.

However, we can GAIN more through doing LESS.

Allow me to explain in this edition of the Mental Warrior Newsletter.

Every week in the Mental Warrior newsletter we break down the quotes and philosophies from modern-day entrepreneurs, successful people, and Mental Warriors.

Matthew McConaughey on Addition Through Subtraction

Alright, alright.

For those that don’t know, Matthew McConaughey is an award-winning actor, entrepreneur, father, husband, and a stud of a man.

I can vouch for Matthew and say he is truly a mental warrior after watching many of his interviews.

I found a great quote from Matthew where he explains how we gain more through doing less.

Matthew explains:

”The first step to figuring out who we are, let’s define who we are not.

Let’s pick out the things, people, and habits that don’t pay us back, or feed us tomorrow.

It’s easier to point out those and get rid of them”.

We Should Have Learned By Now, Do Too Much You Get Burned Out

When we try to do too much, we can wear ourselves out and get burned out.

It is more scalable, practical, and reasonable to do less, first.

Once you figure out what to remove from your life, then you can focus on doing more.

For example, you can use the treadmill every day for 30 minutes and lift for 30 minutes.

You might burn 450 calories from your efforts.

That’s 450 calories which is still LESS than the average fast food meal (or a big cookie if you’re a cookie monster like me).

You can work your ass off, burn all of those calories, try your hardest, and sweat your heart out.

But if you’re diet isn’t good and you are overeating then you will never lose weight.

Instead, you could cut out the french fries from your fast food meal, or eat half the cookie now and half later.

This is addition through subtraction.

Less is more.

Many times it might be a bunch of small things weighing us down. Rarely is it ever a one-solution fix to a problem. It is usually a bunch of small changes that lead to big gains.

This Can’t Wait …

Take Inventory to Drop Dead Weight

So, how do we start the process of addition through subtraction?

To figure out what you can subtract from your life, you must first take inventory.

We need to first figure out what we have before we figure out what to get rid of.

This can go for your diet, your bank account, your health etc.

Trying to save more money?

Go through all of your monthly subscriptions.

Trying to lose weight?

Track everything you put into your body for a week. Then look for foods you can cut out.

Want to learn a new skill?

Practice on the basics first.

We first need to figure out the root of the problem/the sickness, before we can find the cure/solution to the problem.

SIMPLIFY AND WATCH YOUR LIFE FLY

Addition through subtraction is a common theme I have found after studying all of these mental warriors. It helps you simplify your life, cut the dead weight, and focus on what is important and what is working.

If you take anything from this it’s that you need to simplify things in your life so it will help you work smarter and not harder.

Take inventory of your life, and figure out what is working, what is not, what is helping you, and what is helping you.

Because less is more.

Keep it simple my fellow Mental Warrior.
